What is Cold Brew coffee ?
.
First of all, we should clarify what cold brew coffee actually is. Cold brew coffee, as the name suggests, is coffee brewed with cold water rather than hot. With this thought in mind, it is typically allowed to dissolve for several hours rather than a few minutes to get the most from the coffee.
.
As such, it’s primarily considered an alternative to traditional cups of coffee during the summer, when the weather’s too hot for a traditional cup.
.
However, depending on how long you take to brew the coffee, you may need to take care to ensure the cold brew coffee doesn’t just become lukewarm over time. Keeping the cold brew in your fridge is often a popular option.

What about Espresso On Ice / Iced Espresso ?
.
At this point, you might be wondering: what is espresso on ice / iced espresso? Well, an iced espresso is once again as simple as it sounds: espresso served over ice. Before serving, it’s usually shaken up with the ice, and sweeteners may also be added depending on the flavor preference – syrup is a common addition to espresso on ice. See for example a specialty of the region of Puglia in Italy, also called "Caffè Salentino", served with almond syrup.
.
As with cold brew coffee, espresso on ice is served cold rather than hot. It’s a little trickier to make than cold brew coffee, though, since you may need an espresso maker, a French Press, or an espresso machine.

How do Cold Brew and Iced Espresso differ ?
.
Both cold brew coffee and iced espresso are based on coffee. However, the preparation methods for these two beverages are very different and use distinct coffee beans and recipes.
.
For one thing, cold brew coffee is generally made from coarse coffee beans since the beans need to be ground much finer for other types of beverage. By contrast, since cold brew coffee is left for so many hours to brew, a finely-ground bean will often cause the drink to become incredibly bitter in the end. This may make it much less palatable overall, so using a coarse coffee bean is integral. By contrast, to enable rapid processing, iced espresso needs to be made from very fine coffee beans overall.
.
In addition, it’s well worth considering that cold brew coffee and espresso over ice are very different in terms of brewing times. Cold brew coffee is a very slow, drawn-out process. You may need to prepare almost one day in advance if you’d like a cup of cold brew! However, iced espresso is ready in a matter of minutes, so long as you have ice pre-frozen.
.
There’s quite a lot of difference in terms of flavor. Notably, espresso tends to be pretty bitter, for the most part; usually, people add a type of syrup to their iced espresso to make it more enjoyable as a result. By contrast, cold brew has a different profile with a mildly sour flavor and much less bitterness since the bitter flavors generally remain locked within the coffee bean by the time you’re done. We also advise you to prepare Cold Brew with Speciality Coffee type of coffees … the result in cup can be incredibly exquisite!

Which is stronger : Cold Brew or Iced Espresso ?
.
Generally speaking, an iced espresso will have a much stronger flavor and aroma than cold brew coffee. Though cold brew coffee is brewed over a long period of time, it doesn’t necessarily release all of its compounds; as such, cold brew coffee is much milder than espresso, which is very bitter.
.
However, in terms of caffeine content, a cup of cold brew coffee is much higher in caffeine compared to a shot of espresso. However, since espresso is very concentrated, shots are very small – meaning that iced espresso would be more caffeinated by weight and volume.
.
In the end, both cold brew and iced espresso are excellent to combine with syrups. As such, if you’d like a specific flavor, a coffee syrup might be what you need.

Final thoughts
.
If you’ve been looking for a new drink to enjoy this summer, a cold brew or espresso on ice might be just the drink you deserve. Of course, it’s important to remember that everyone has unique preferences when it comes to coffee; so just because you prefer one doesn’t mean that it’s everyone’s favorite! So, be sure to give both a try to see which one you prefer overall; you might just find a brand-new way to enjoy coffee as a result!
