The Neapolitan coffee culture is a very complex system of traditions, rituals, and behaviours. It is a way of life that distinguishes the Neapolitan from other Italians.

.

There are many espresso bars in Naples where you can get « na tazzulell’è cafè ». This tradition goes back to the early 19th century when Naples had a lot of cafes and people would go there to drink their favourite drink while they socialised with others.

Coffee roasters are very popular in Naples, as they roast and sell their own coffee blends. This practice has been going on since 1770 when Maria Carolina of Austria introduced coffee to Naples, after marrying Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies.

Yes, you read that right: Italians have developed a unique know-how in terms of coffee, but we owe it to a noble Austrian lady! Danke !

You can drink coffee everywhere in Italy, but Neapolitan coffee has something special, something very unique. Their attachment to the morning espresso is very strong. An indispensable ritual in the life of Neapolitans.

The coffee culture in Naples is strong because of the high quality and unique taste of their espresso. They are very specialized in strong and intense coffee blends, with a lot of body.

Ever heard about "la Cuccumella" ? It was invented by an It ... nope, wrong again ! It was created in France, by a tinsmith called Morize, in 1819. The tool then reached Naples, where it was perfected. It is also the big sister of the famous Italian Moka.

A drink that accompanies them everywhere

The Neapolitan coffee culture is a very complex system of traditions, rituals, and behaviours. It is a way of life that distinguishes the Neapolitan from other Italians.

We will start by looking at the tradition of drinking espresso for breakfast. The Neapolitan drink espresso for breakfast because it gives them energy and prepares them for the day ahead.

The ritual of drinking coffee in Naples can be seen in many different aspects of their lives. For example, when they meet with friends or family, they would offer each other an espresso to show their hospitality and friendship, no matter the time of the day.

This ritualistic act has been passed down through generations even though people no longer have to make coffee themselves because now it’s available everywhere.

It was also in Naples that the famous « caffè sospeso » (literally hanging coffee) was invented: a tradition that confirms that generosity of Neapolitan people. The coffee is offered to the next customer, a passer-by or a homeless person who cannot afford an espresso.
